Video series focuses on the plight of musicians in lockdown
Photographer Sebastian Nevols has a long list of commercial clients, including Arthritis UK, Guardian Weekend, National Theatre, ENO, Channel 4, ITV, Audi, Wired, and Shortlist. Recently, though, he's put his energies into a personal project; a short series of videos in which a diverse range of musicians perform to empty locations across the UK's capital.
These moving performances capture the talent of musicians whose ability to earn has been devastated by lockdown, including trumpeter, vocalist and visual artist Sheila Maurice-Grey, soprano Miranda Heldt, and tabla player Gurdain Rayatt.
The project aims to raise awareness for Help Musicians, an independent charity that provides a broad spectrum of help, support and opportunities to empower musicians, who are still unable to earn a living while music venues remain closed.
"This is a historic moment," says Sebastian. "Laws forbid us to even give a simple handshake or embrace, denying our natural impulse to connect. The impact this will have on performing arts and broader fields of creativity is devastating, and we must work to support this industry."
