The tender portraits of both young and old aim to break down stereotypes that are often associated with gypsies. "I want the audience to realise that the subjects I photograph are valuable members of society," says Sandra. "My aim is to capture the resolute, spirited nature of the people I have met and the pride they rightly feel towards their ancestry."
Entitled Proud of the Origin, the project is ongoing. "I hope it will contribute to changing the dominant point of view and our thinking about traveller communities," she adds.
Sandra Mickiewicz is a Polish documentary photographer who lives and works in North London. In 2007, her family immigrated to the UK where she began to develop her skills in painting and drawing. She discovered photography at the age of 15. Since then, Sandra uses her camera as a tool to communicate with the world. She is drawn to "very ordinary and conventional moments in our everyday life", which she documents through portraiture and landscape photography.
In 2018 she graduated from Middlesex University in London where she studied photography. You can discover more and follow her work at www.sandramickiewicz.com.
