Digital illustrations of city infrastructure tiled and transformed into pleasing patterns
Paul Hallows, aka himHallows, has launched a new series of illustrated patterns responding to the "increasing demand on the infrastructure that underpins our cities".

Simply named Infrastructure, the collection of patterned artworks features subjects that range from shipping containers to substation pylons to air conditioning units. "The patterns make use of scale to create images that appear logical in construction but abstract in their repetition," explains Paul.
You can see this new series in an upcoming exhibition at the Modernist Gallery in Manchester, from 23 August. (Book your tickets here.)
Based at the Engine House in Islington Mill, Salford, Paul has spent the last five years as a full-time freelance illustrator. Coming from a self-taught background, he started out by making gig posters for local bands and friends in the Manchester creative community. This led to broader freelance work and Paul has since branched out into animation.
"I’ve had the chance to do branding for an event at the Barbican, the graphics for a documentary on the human brain and a fun history project for the schoolchildren of Hounslow," Paul adds. "I had my first solo show last year with a series of illustrations of Greater Manchester’s brutalist buildings which was well received by the concrete lovers of Manchester and felt like a warm homecoming after spending several months in London."
