Rockstar turned artist Azuma Makoto and his giant botanical hybrid sculptures
For almost two decades Azuma Makoto – who famously gave up being a rockstar to pursue a career in art – has crafted the most incredible botanical sculptures from his studio in Tokyo, Jardins Des Fleurs.

With a wild imagination, we have come to expect the unexpected from the Japanese artist, famed for his bright blonde hair and incredible experimentation. He has fired a bonsai tree into space, encased thousands of fresh flowers in iceboxes and fire-torched dahlias – all in the name of creativity.
In 2009, he launched his own lab, Azuma Makoto Kaju Kenkyusho (otherwise known as AMKK) – a space where he is able to experiment with flowers and plants. His latest installation, Damned Ikebana Sculpture, consists of two giant hybrid flowers – one being an interesting mixture of a tulip and cyathium. Discover more at azumamakoto.com.
