The role

A lead-level product design post at Monzo, part of a Design team of more than 115 designers, researchers and brand specialists led by the Chief Design Officer. Product designers make up almost half of that team and work in squads alongside research, product and engineering. The role can be based in the London office or done remotely from within the UK, with occasional meetings in London.

What you'll do

  • Take on the most complex and ambiguous design challenges, turning them into elegant, scalable solutions that help teams and improve the customer experience
  • Define and deliver large-scale projects that connect initiatives across the business, using design methods to align strategies
  • Lead the creation of product visions, principles and direction that give teams a shared future to build towards
  • Use AI throughout the design workflow, from generating ideas and prototyping to shipping production code to the app
  • Raise standards of visual execution, including motion, interaction and how clearly a design maps to the way people think
  • Improve the design system, tooling and processes
  • Work across functions and tie your work to wider business goals
  • Act as a role model: mentor others, share work and support the growth of the Design team

About you

  • A proven record of customer-centred native app design that solves complex problems and delivers commercial results
  • Experience of leading research, defining product visions and aligning teams
  • Skilled at modular, scalable solutions and at communicating insight through design artefacts
  • Able to work across several squads, align leadership and bring clarity where things are ambiguous
  • Interested in improving design systems and ways of working
  • Committed to hiring, mentoring and building a positive team culture
  • Enthusiastic about Monzo's mission

What's on offer

  • Incentive awards linked to performance, on top of salary
  • £1,000 learning budget each year for books, courses and conferences
  • Flexible working hours, with trust to work the hours that suit you and your team
  • Help with relocating to the UK, and visa sponsorship
  • A MacBook and support with setting up to work from home, with extra support for fully remote staff
  • Further benefits are listed on Monzo's careers page

The process

  • 30-minute call with a recruiter
  • One-hour craft interview, presenting a single case study to two members of the Design team
  • Two 45-minute interviews, one on teamwork and one on impact
  • The whole process should take about four weeks, and Monzo will be flexible on scheduling
  • There is no fixed closing date; the role closes once enough applications have come in for the next stage, so Monzo advises applying early
  • The application asks for a portfolio link and right-to-work status
  • The application also asks about cross-functional experience and end-to-end design for mobile native apps

The details

  • Salary: £90,000 – £120,000, plus performance-linked incentive awards
  • Location: London (hybrid), Cardiff or remote within the UK
  • Level: lead
  • No closing date is given; the listing closes once Monzo has enough applications

How to apply

Apply through Monzo's careers site with your CV and a portfolio link. The process is a recruiter call, a one-hour craft interview with a case study, and two 45-minute interviews, over about four weeks.
