The role

An art director post in the Opinion Design team at The New York Times, reporting to the Design Director, Opinion. You would work with the Opinion print editors to give the daily Opinion pages a visual identity separate from the newsroom's, combining typography, photography, data visualisation and commissioned or real-time illustration, and adapting digital-first journalism for print. The role is represented by the NewsGuild of NY and is in the New York office four days a week, with some remote work possible under departmental guidance.

What you'll do

  • Devise and carry out design solutions from concept to publication across print and digital
  • Work with editors, photo editors and other stakeholders to agree a visual approach and to translate interactive or video journalism into print
  • Commission and art direct illustrations, building a network of creative talent
  • Push what layouts can do through art placement, structure and the way illustration is integrated
  • Write display copy and edit text yourself to improve the flow of a layout
  • Manage whole project lifecycles in the Times's proprietary publishing systems, meeting tight daily deadlines
  • Provide flexible cover for the Sunday section when schedules require it
  • Support the company's journalistic independence and its mission

About you

  • Five or more years of print and digital design experience, leading editorial projects, launches and redesigns with senior leadership
  • Proven art direction and visual editing skills, including commissioning talent, curating photography and illustrating on tight timelines
  • Command of design tools (Adobe Creative Suite, Figma, pagination software) and pre-press production, including colour correction and preparing files for print
  • Desirable: strong communication skills and the ability to handle an intense, news-led schedule, including nights and weekends
  • Desirable: newsroom or media experience and good visual judgement about trends in illustration and photography
  • Desirable: enthusiasm for off-platform visual storytelling and knowledge of domestic and international competitors
  • Desirable: experience streamlining design workflows for deadlines and managing feedback from several stakeholders

What's on offer

  • Depending on the role, variable pay such as an annual bonus and restricted stock
  • Medical, dental and vision cover
  • Flexible Spending Accounts
  • 401(k) with company matching
  • Employee stock purchase plan
  • Paid holiday, paid sick days and paid parental leave
  • Tuition reimbursement and professional development programmes

The process

  • Apply with a CV and cover letter
  • The form asks about work authorisation, visa sponsorship, and whether you live in the New York City or Tri-State area and can commute for the office schedule
  • Applicants are asked to submit their own work and not to use generative AI tools to produce substantive content at any point in the application or interviews

The details

  • Salary: $124,979.94 – $141,000, with possible bonus and stock on top
  • Location: New York, NY; in the office four days a week
  • Level: senior (5+ years); a NewsGuild of New York union role

Apply through The New York Times careers site. The listing asks applicants not to use generative AI for the substance of their application.
